GIS Technician and Airborne Sensor Operator

The role is to work alongside the existing production and survey team to perform varied GIS analysis and mapping tasks, alongside operating our suite of aerial survey sensors in our survey aircraft. The role requires an individual with a keen desire to learn and grow their skills within a GIS and aerial survey role. The candidate should have a strong work ethic and a desire to develop a greater understanding of geospatial data. Full training on the airborne sensor operator aspects of the position is given. Prior experience is advantageous.

Purpose: 

The purpose of the role is to work alongside the existing production and aerial survey operations team and assist with the delivery and fulfilment of high-quality aerial survey projects and ensuring that all opportunities are maximized, and the data is of the highest quality and to the required specification.

Responsibilities: 

The responsibilities for the position of Airborne Operations Specialist include but are not limited to:

  • Performing GIS analysis on a wide range of projects large and small (experience of ArcGIS & QGIS would be advantageous)
  • Deriving mapping products and deliverables from GIS datasets
  • Spatial Database maintenance (experience of SQL, Post-GIS and Postgresql would be advantageous)
  • GIS data production related tasks, such as aerial image processing
  • Attribute towards in-house software development and research (experience of Python would be advantageous)
  • Liaise with project management with project progress and status.
  • Monitor weather conditions to identify appropriate weather windows for data capture.
  • Operate airborne camera and sensing systems, including Vexcel Eagle, Optech Galaxy, Leica CityMapper.
  • Ensure the sensor systems are calibrated at an operation level at all times in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Liaise with sensor manufacturers about maintenance and other issues.
  • Liaise with ATC and other departments for flight permissions.
  • Survey mission planning (sensor flight planning).
  • Assist sales with enquiries and quotes.
  • Coordinate with the rest of the survey team to ensure projects are completed in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Aid sensor installation into survey aircraft.
  • Field testing and calibration of instruments.
  • Co-ordinate survey missions to ensure maximum efficiency.
  • Assist with towing out and movement of aircraft from the hangar.

Requirements: 

  • Must be eligible to work in the US and communicate fully in English.
  • An understanding of GIS, Aerial Survey and Remote Sensing.
  • Organisational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Analytical, numeracy and well-developed interpersonal skills.
  • Diplomacy and the ability to work to deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Desire and willingness to learn new software and processes.

Desirable Qualifications: 

  • A degree in a Geographical, Remote Sensing or GIS related discipline.
